World Facing Unprecedented Food Crisis

“We are now looking at a food situation unlike any we’ve seen before,” Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute announced this morning at a press conference on the fallout from skyrocketing food prices around the world.

“We’re seeing spreading social unrest and instability in scores of countries around the world. The list of failing states is getting longer year by year, and is likely to increase dramatically as governments face potentially unmanageable shortages.”

In seven of the last eight years world grain consumption exceeded production, and carry-over stocks have dropped to a 55 day supply, the lowest ever.

With more people in the world today, and the world’s markets more closely integrated than ever, says Brown, “We are one poor harvest away from chaos.”

GreenWest Expo takes Green Building to the Next Level

Green Building is both a rediscovery of old technology - like siting buildings properly, and using natural sunlight and airflow to heat and cool them - and the latest high technology, like photovoltaics to provide power, smart meters to control energy use, and more efficient building materials.

But the real challenges to building green are not technological, but human.

At the recent GreenWest Expo in Los Angeles, panelists identified three of the main challenges to Green Building, and discussed ways to move the field forward.

Sustainable Investing a “Massive Opportunity” say Experts

With an avalanche of interest in clean energy and businesses of all sizes exploring ways to go green, sustainability represents “a massive opportunity for investment right now,” says Brett Conrad, managing partner of Longboard Capital Advisors.

At the recent GreenWest Expo, Conrad and other financial experts held a panel on “Investing in Sustainability,” offering advice on the current state of the market, and tips for getting involved.
